Curtain Care & Maintenance Guide
At Rainbow Furnishings, we use premium quality yarns and fabrics to craft your curtains. To ensure they retain their royal look, fall, and color vibrancy for years to come, proper care is essential.
Different fabrics require different care. Please follow this expert guide based on the type of curtains you have purchased.
1. The Golden Rule
"When in doubt, Dry Clean." If your curtains have heavy embroidery, beadwork, or are made of premium Velvet/Chenille, we highly recommend Professional Dry Cleaning only. Home washing may damage the backing or texture of heavy fabrics.
2. Washing Instructions (By Fabric Type)
-
Premium Royal Curtains (Velvet, Chenille, Textured):
-
Recommendation: Dry Clean Only.
-
Why: Water can crush the velvet pile and cause shrinkage in heavy backing materials.
-
-
Sheer Curtains (Net/Tissue):
-
Recommendation: Gentle Hand Wash.
-
Method: Soak in cold water with a mild liquid detergent for 15-20 minutes. Rinse gently. Do not wring or twist hard.
-
-
Polyester & Cotton Blends (Regular Daily Use):
-
Recommendation: Machine Washable (Gentle Cycle).
-
Method: Use cold water. Do not use bleach. Remove hooks/rings before putting them in the machine (or tie the upper part with a string to protect the eyelet rings).
-
3. Drying Tips
-
Avoid Direct Sunlight: Always dry your curtains in the shade. Direct sunlight while drying can fade even the highest quality imported dyes.
-
Do Not Tumble Dry: Never use a dryer (heater) for curtains. It damages the fiber elasticity. Let them drip dry naturally.
-
Hang While Damp: A pro tip is to hang the curtains back on the rod while they are slightly damp. Their own weight will remove most wrinkles as they dry.
4. Ironing & Steaming
-
Iron on Reverse: Always iron on the back side of the fabric to avoid "shiny patches" on the front.
-
Temperature: Use a Low to Medium heat setting.
-
Steam is Best: For heavy curtains, using a vertical garment steamer is the safest and most effective way to remove creases without taking the curtains down.
5. Managing Shrinkage
-
Please note that natural fabrics (like 100% Cotton or Linen) have a natural tendency to shrink (2% - 5%) after the first wash. This is a characteristic of the natural fiber, not a defect. We recommend dry cleaning to minimize this.
6. Vacuuming (Regular Maintenance)
-
You don't need to wash curtains frequently. Simply vacuum them once a month using the upholstery attachment to remove dust and allergens. This keeps the colors bright.
